Personality; Barristan is a knight through and through. He epitomises chivalry and honour and matches it with the service of Lords and Kings. When he has been forced, through his vows, to have to hide his moral code it eats away incessantly at him. He has also kept silent his whole life about the woman he fell for and the blame he put on himself for her eventual disgrace and suicide. 'If only he had spoken up about his feelings' is a thought he agonises over for years and he never lets it truly die. He holds on to his moral code and his vows like his lifeblood.
Having been a warrior almost his entire life and a knight for almost as many, the code and the lifestyle comes as naturally to him as breathing. Nothing will change that and he has remained steadfast through some fairly traumatic times to his morals.
He will also do whatever he needs to to protect both the life of his liege and their laws. This is best shown in his current age and mindset as when Daenerys is spirited away on Drogon, he will not accede to the suggestions of her court and break the peace she bought. He reluctantly stands as her Hand during her disappearance and holds with all his might onto the things she had desired so that he might return them to her upon her reappearance. Even when it seems foolish to do so, he refuses to let down his Queen.
He wishes to "wash away the stains" the Lannisters left on his Kingsguard white cloak and, after assuring himself that Daenerys was of sound mind, pledged himself to her service as he had once done to her father. He protects her as a grandfather would his favoured grandchild as well as the Lord Commander of her Queensguard.
Barristan is a rock. Stable, dependable and hard to shift. Once he is set on a course, it will be seen through to the end. A devoted ally, servant and knight; but he also serves as a wise counsellor and surrogate family if his masters wish him to be. If they do not, he will simply guard them with everything he has and stay silent.
Barristan has no "abilities" in any kind of supernatural sense, but he is terrifically skilled with weaponry as he has been a knight for nearly fifty years. He can out-fight many knights of a much younger age with ease.

Barristan had heard a low rumble a little way down a side alley and then the sound of a scared woman met his ears. His eyes narrowed and he looked down the alley, already in motion to intervene. The familiar hilt of his sword was in his grip, ready for the blade to be drawn if he felt it was required.
A few sure-footed steps for a man of his age and he turned a corner and found the source of the disturbance. There was a man, no, two men and they appeared to be attempting to rob that poor lady. The first would be easy to take care of, the second thought he had not been sighted. Barristan could tell by the way he tried to hold himself still so as not to give himself away. He would attempt a surprise assault when he was busy with the first, the instinct ingrained in decades of knightly service.
"Stand aside, my Lady," he told her, the familiar sching of metal on metal as he withdrew his blade from it's scabbard. "I will retrieve your belongings on my honour as a knight."
Barristan ignored the retorted slight on both his age and vigour and gave the more visible robber one last chance.
"Cede those ill-gotten goods to me and I will not hand you to the city watch," he told him, only to receive another snide comment and an ill-aimed gobbet of spittle.
With a fluid and practiced movement, Barristan disarmed the first man and turned smoothly into the second. He had done as Selmy had predicted and tried to use an element of surprise that had never existed. He was on the ground before he knew what had happened and Barristan turned back to the first. He noted the look of astonishment tinged with fear and the old knight used his pommel to knock the would-be robber out.
"My Lady," he said, picking her items from the floor and handing them back to her. "I will call the city watch to apprehend these two, would you like me to escort you back to your home?"
At her relieved response, the old man smiled. This was why he had forsaken any lands, a wife and children. To be able to protect those that required it. He believed that today he had done a deed to earn the donning of his white cloak.
